In a lion pride, the relationship between a male lion and his mate and cubs can be surprisingly tender. While lionesses do most of the hunting and cub-rearing, a protective male will guard the pride from outside threats and rival males. He may play gently with his cubs, allow them to climb on him, or rest close by.
