Today is Proclamation Day, with the founding of the colony of South Australia on 28 December 1836. Adelaide, the capital, is known as the City Of Churches. (The phrase City of Churches is not about the buildings. If it were about buildings, we should instead be known as the City Of Pubs.) In the colonial times, in what was then named Kingdom of Great Britain, you needed to be a practising member of the Church of England to hold a public office.
