The Opossum’s Tail (Its Appearance And Purpose)

Look at that tail go! Opossums can actually swim surprisingly well. If you haven’t seen an opossum swim before, here it is. You’re welcome. At a release earlier this month, this group of orphaned Virginia opossums wandered out of their crate and started to go into the woods and tall grass…except this one. He turned around the other way towards this pond, slowly stepped into the water, sniffed around, tested it out, then quickly took off like he’s done it a million times before! We couldn’t be mo

Opossums are full of neat adaptations! One of them is their prehensile tail, which they use as a fifth appendage. Check out our non-releasable opossum Dash using his tail to collect straw for his bed. Because he had to undergo a partial tail amputation, this task is a little harder for him, but don’t worry, we made him a nice & cozy bed! Do opossums hang by their tails? They have something called a prehensile tail. A prehensile tail is adapted for grasping and wrapping around things like tree limbs. The opossum can hang from its tail for a short time. Some people think opossums hang from their tails and sleep. They don't. Their tails aren't strong enough to hold them for that long. Meet one of our newest patients, his mom was hit by a car and didn’t survive. He and 5 other siblings are now in our care and will stay with us for t

Speaking of opossums, here's something you don't get to see very often! Opossums need their prehensile tails for balance, to stabilize them when climbing and to grasp nesting materials, among other things. In fact, opossums are so dependent on their tails that they can't survive without them - an opossum with less than 2/3rds its tail is not releasable. Luckily, we at WEST have not encountered such a situation yet! Thanks to Anna M Cardenas for giving us permission to use her fantastic video! #v

Opossums use their prehensile tails for more than just balance for climbing! It is a useful fifth limb for carrying material back to their nest. This little opossum was trying to do just that, although he would have more success with something smaller than himself. Perhaps that conveniently placed bucket of leaves? #opossum #wildlife #animals #nature | Carolina Wildlife Conservation Center

Look at those opossum feet! 🐾 💡 Did you know that opossums, like their marsupial relatives Koalas, have opposable thumbs! For opossums, these thumbs are specifically on their hind feet. This, along with their prehensile tail, helps them climb and hold branches! | Fort Worth Zoo

Have you ever seen an opposum do this in the woods? Opossums have prehensile (capable of grasping) tails that act like an extra hand! They can curl their tails around leaves, twigs, and other small objects to move them, gather nesting materials, and help build dens. While their tails aren’t super strong, they’re surprisingly handy for lightweight tasks and help opossums survive in the wild. 🍂 You never know what you're going to see on a deer hunt! #opossums #KYWildlife #OpossumTail #WildlifeFac

While opossums can't hang from their tails like they do in cartoons, their tails are still quite useful. They provide support while climbing and can also carry cargo! In this video, the opossum walks by the camera with a tail full of hay. A second clip shows the process of grabbing clumps of hay off the ground, pushing it backward with its feet and grabbing it with its tail. 🎥 courtesy of Brandy Miller | U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
