Residents and visitors across the Hawaiian Islands were sent scrambling after a tsunami warning was sent out on Tuesday.
Tsunami warning sirens were blaring Tuesday in Honolulu, and people were told to move to higher ground. This comes after an 8.7-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Far Eastern coast, the Associated Press reported. Traffic was backed up in some neighborhoods in Honolulu.
Alaska Airlines is pausing flights to Hawaii, where an emergency proclamation is issued ahead of tsunami waves expected to hit the islands Tuesday evening. “As a safety precaution, flights en route to Hawaii are returning to the mainland or diverting as needed,” a spokesperson for the airline said in an email.
Tom Judd, a Clovis resident visiting Maui for a summer getaway, has been hearing tsunami sirens every hour and is taking precautions such as going to high ground and turning off elevators.
