Now, a team led by Osaka University has invented a ratchet-like molecular machine -- a potential component of sophisticated molecular devices -- which allows movement in one direction only.

Researchers have just begun to build artificial nanomachines that perform simple tasks, such as moving molecules, by steering random motion in one direction rather than another.
