Reliance Retail has launched an app in India to sell fashionwear from China's Shein under a licensing deal, almost five years since Shein's app was banned in the country after getting caught up in a diplomatic tussle.

Shein, now based in Singapore, is offering affordable fast fashion in India. Two years ago, Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd partnered with Shein to sell its products in the country. In a written response to the Lok Sabha last month,

Founded in China in 2012 and later headquartered in Singapore, Shein became popular for its affordable Western fashion. However, its app was among the Chinese applications banned in India in 2020.

Shein has returned to the Indian market through a new app launched by Reliance Retail, focusing on local manufacturing and strict data sovereignty. The move comes as Shein plans a potential London stock market listing and faces increased regulatory scrutiny in Europe.
