The Norfolk-based carrier USS Harry S. Truman has returned to duty following a crash with a smaller ship while in the Mediterranean Sea.

USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75), the flagship of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group, collided with M/V Besiktas-M on Wednesday evening near Port Said, Egypt, in the Mediterranean Sea, the Navy said Thursday.

Capt. Dave Snowden's relief comes one week after the carrier collided with a merchant vessel while operating in the Mediterranean Sea.

Capt. Dave Snowden will be temporarily assigned to Naval Air Forces Atlantic. The Navy cited a loss of confidence in his ability to command as their reasoning to relieve him.

The Norfolk-based Harry S. Truman is back at sea, having received repairs following a Feb. 12 collision while in the Mediterranean Sea.

The Navy says the collision happened around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday near Port Said, Egypt. USS Truman was not impacted by flooding after the collision and there were no reported injuries.
