Answer: Kristopher, as you know, lean oxygen sensor and fuel trim codes can be some of the hardest fault codes to diagnose.
The short- and long-term fuel-trim numbers should remain within single digits. If they do, we can be reasonably sure that the MAF sensor is functioning correctly.
While the sensors’ signal will fluctuate frequently upstream, where short-term fuel trim is measured, the signal at the sensors further down should be fairly constant.
Oxygen sensors are not among the maintenance items that need to be replaced regularly, so they typically are replaced only when they fail.
Individual cylinder problems get averaged in with their siblings on that bank, and the fuel trims are only as reliable as the oxygen or air-fuel sensor that reported the issue.
For example, last time we covered Short Term Fuel Trim and Long Term Fuel Trim on 1996-and-newer Corvettes. On the 1982-’95 Corvettes we will refer to the fuel trims as Integrator and Block Learn.

A value within 5 percent of 1.00 or 100 percent is desirable. Short-term fuel trim is an immediate correction. The computer is watching the oxygen sensor to see how much oxygen is in the exhaust.
