Whole milk will be making its return to public-school cafeterias after a 10-year absence, thanks to a new bill unanimously approved by Congress late last year and signed into law on Wednesday by President Trump.
The bill Trump signed, the bipartisan Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act, cleared Congress last fall. The Department of Agriculture said Wednesday it will rewrite Child Nutrition Programs to align with the updated guidelines and begin implementing the policy with school nutrition officials immediately.
Since 1990, federal dietary guidelines have suggested that children aged 2 and up should consume skim or low-fat milk to limit their consumption of saturated fats. Several health organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association, have supported that advice.
