The map of the Northern Mariana Islands highlights its position in the Micronesia region of the western Pacific Ocean. This chain of 14 islands extends over 400 miles (640 km) from north to south.

These include flags, coins, and often letters. The latest came from Bill Matthews who writes on behalf of his siblings: Our Dad was stationed on Iwo Jima in WWII.

But its history, however contested, is a powerful reminder that this flag that’s now as ubiquitous in June as the U.S. flag during the bicentennial started out as a thoroughly DIY art experiment.
