Bangladesh’s ex-leader Hasina and niece, British lawmaker Tulip Siddiq, found guilty of corruption
A court in Bangladesh’s capital sentenced ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to five years in prison and her niece, British Labour Party lawmaker Tulip Siddiq, to two years for corruption involving a government land project.
Tulip then allegedly used her influence as a British MP to persuade Hasina to secure plots in the names of her mother Rehana, her sister Azmina Siddiq Ruponti, and her brother Radwan Mujib Siddiq.
The Labour MP received the custodial sentence for corruption involving a Government land project, whilst her aunt, ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, was jailed for five years. Following the verdict, Ms Siddiq said in a statement: “This whole process has been flawed and farcical from the beginning to the end.
Leading British lawyers, including a former Conservative justice secretary, have described the trial in Bangladesh of former UK city minister Tulip Siddiq as “contrived and unfair.”
A Dhaka court will deliver its verdict today (1 December) in a corruption case filed against 17 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana and Rehana's daughter British MP Tulip Siddiq, over alleged irregularities in Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) plot allocation.
