A coalition of liberal-led states, including Hawaii, filed a federal lawsuit today challenging the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s recent demand that they turn over the personal information of millions of people receiving federal food assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

The lawsuit argues that the federal government’s demand was an attempt to obtain sensitive personal information for use outside the food stamp program.
