Demonstrators gathered in a tense city following two days of skirmishes between protesters and federal officers over immigration operations that prompted the White House’s rare move to deploy troops without first being asked by the state.

President Donald Trump is deploying 2,000 California National Guard troops to quell the violence, against the wishes of the state's Gov. Gavin Newsom and the city's Mayor Karen Bass, both Democrats.

National Guard troops arrived in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday after being ordered into the city by President Trump in response to a weekend of violent clashes between law enforcement officers and protesters triggered by immigration enforcement operations in the area on Friday.
