Palestinians were seen arriving in Gaza City after a U.S.-brokered ceasefire took effect. The Israeli military said the truce deal came into effect at 12 p.m. local time. Israel posted a list of 250 Palestinian prisoners to be released from Israeli prisons in exchange for hostages, as part of the ceasefire deal.

The United States is sending about 200 troops to Israel to help support and monitor the ceasefire deal in Gaza as part of a team that includes partner nations, nongovernmental organizations and private-sector players.

Most Democrats left President Trump conspicuously unmentioned as they cheered a potential end to the conflict, reflecting the tricky politics around the war and their party’s deep hostility to Mr. Trump.

Israel is blocking 250 tons of aid for Gaza, including food, medical supplies and educational material, because of disagreements over its content, an Italian charity involved in last month's international flotilla said on Thursday.

Egyptian President Abdel Fatah El Sisi also said Wednesday that the messages he had received out of the talks in Sharm el-Sheikh were "very encouraging."
