Tropical Storm Gil is anticipated to strengthen into a hurricane in the eastern Pacific, posing no immediate threat to land. Located 995 miles west-southwest of Baja California, it has winds of 70 mph and moves west-northwest at 17 mph.

Gil is the seventh named storm to form in the Eastern Pacific in 2025. Storms that form in the Atlantic or the Pacific generally move west, meaning Atlantic storms pose a greater threat to North America. If a storm forms in the Pacific close to land, it can bring damaging winds and rain before pushing out to sea.

Tropical Storm Iona continued racing west across the Central Pacific early today while Tropical Storm Gil strengthened far to the east, with both systems posing no threat to Hawaii, forecasters said.
